Road transfer could become swap
GRAPHIC PROVIDED BY CITY OF VENICE
A portion of the enclaves (shown in yellow) annexed in 2002 are superimposed over country-maintained roads (green). The county wants to transfer the maintenance of these and other roads to the city. County- maintained roads not requested for transfer to the city are in red.
If Sarasota County wants the city of Venice to assume maintenance responsibility for all its neighborhood roads, it will need to come up with a better argument than that currently being offered, say city officials.
The crux of the county’s argument has been that the city should have taken over maintenance of certain roads in front of lots it involuntarily annexed in 2002.
