Citizens of all 50 states have submitted online petitions asking the Obama administration to somehow “peacefully grant” them permission to up and quit. The union. Us. Or U.S. Speak up if you’ve heard something like this one before. History class, for instance? As of Thursday morning, more than 31,000 Floridians are on board with the idea of throwing the Sunshine State overboard. A scan of the signatures posted on the White House petition site shows two locals — identified only by first name and last initial — were among the most recent 500 or so to sign.
About 10 percent of those signing are out-of-staters who want to see Florida take a hike. This may, of course, be more of a reflection on our apparent inability to competently consummate an election than sympathy for some home-grown desire for independence. Either way, the petition has exceeded the 25,000 signature mark. As a result, the administration promises to post an official response as it did recently for a petition asking the recipe for its White House Honey Ale.
