Orange House offers wine, just a bite

Walk through the Orange House Wine Bar and you will likely see the smiling faces of owners Ruth and Bob Wessel, who have created a most comfortable place for people to relax and enjoy a quality wine and a bite.

A wine rack is largely filled with empty bottles; the Orange House wine is kept in temperature-controlled storage. Paintings in the comfortable room are by the Wessels’ partner, artist Frank Lawson.

When Bob and Ruth Wessel decided to open a wine bar in the orange building they own on Sullivan Street, they had no idea what they were getting into. They are both wine lovers but wouldn’t ever call themselves connoisseurs. Fortunately, however, they knew they had more to offer than wine.

Though they had previous retail experience in town, their main goal was not to get rich but to provide a gathering place downtown for people to have a glass of wine, relax and enjoy themselves. That they are succeeding in that quest is a testament to their belief residents of Punta Gorda will flock to a place where everybody knows your name.
