GULF BREEZE (AP) — A Panhandle woman has been arrested after authorities said they found the bodies of six animals in an abandoned home.

Authorities say 40-year-old Toni Phelps abandoned the home last spring because she was facing foreclosure. Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s deputies found three dogs and three cats dead in the house on Tuesday. Authorities said it looked like the animals scavenged for food to survive, eating furniture cushions and whatever they could find.

Phelps faces multiple charges including causing cruel death, pain or suffering to an animal and abandonment of an animal.

The Pensacola News Journal reports she turned herself in to the Escambia County Jail on Friday and was released after posting $36,500 bond.

She is not allowed to own any animals as part of her release.
