Museum shows support to local veterans

Retired Vietnam veteran and U.S. Marine Cpl. George Kauffman served from March of 1966 to November 1966 before he was hit by four grenades, two satchel charges, a grease gun and machine gun fire. Guest of honor for the day was U.S. Air Force Gen. Fred Buckingham, who trades stories with Master Sgt. Joe Dinish, who has a total of 39 years in the service of the U.S. Army and Air Force. He is a recipient of the Purple Heart and is currently a medical researcher for NASA.

U.S. Air Force Gen. Fred Buckingham is inducted into the 2012 Wall of Warriors by Kim Lovejoy, executive director at the Military Heritage Museum. During his 30 years of service, Buckingham commanded a C-130 flying squadron and all its stateside C-130 flying wings. As a command pilot, he has flown more than 6,000 hours, which include 680 combat hours in South Vietnam. The general received numerous awards during his service. He is now retired in Punta Gorda and has served on the board of directors of the Florida International Air Show since 1996 and has held the position of chairman since 1999.

In honor of Veterans Day, the Military Heritage Museum at Fishermen’s Village
had a day of reminiscing and story telling on Nov. 11. Children and adults alike were enthralled
by the tales told during the event called War Tales, with some of the anecdotes
dating back to World War II and as recent as the war in Iraq.
