Then Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association president Marlene Hofer, sitting, far right, led the volunteer appreciation luncheon last year and handed out thank-you plaques to groups of members who do everything from taking care of the buildings and grounds to manning the front desk. The volunteer spirit is strong in PGICA, and nobody exemplifies it more than Hofer herself.

Punta Gorda runs on the backs of its volunteers. Sure the city does an excellent job of providing the basic services — sewer and water, trash pick up, fire, police, EMT, street and canal maintenance — that make this a great place to live.
