Janice Anne Johnston, 64, of Punta Gorda, Fla., departed this life Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at home; breast cancer took her away after a 20-month heroic battle.

She was born June 16, 1949, in Jersey City, N.J., and grew up in Fair Lawn, N.J.

Fair Lawn High School graduated Janice in 1967, before moving to Arkansas. In 1986, Janice relocated to Punta Gorda, and worked for Medical Center Hospital. She had a creative spirit, and additionally did art and design projects for local businesses.

In the early ’90s, she showed multimedia art in regional juried shows, and was a member of the Visual Arts Center. Janice also participated in weekly art demonstrations at Fishermen’s Village. In 1997, she opened the very popular Harbor Tea Room at the Harbor Inn Antique Mall at the foot of the Charlotte Harbor bridge. She offered a Victorian experience with proper tea and original pastries. The “dress-up room” with designer hats, boas and accessories was fun for all. Sadly, all was lost in Hurricane Charley. The BBC television filmed the Tea Room and interviewed Janice as a follow-up story for Charley six months after.

We will always remember Janice for her strength of character and generosity.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 24 years, David Bruce Johnston; son, Shawn Paul Eudy; granddaughter, Darby Eudy; stepchildren, Rhonda Drinkwater, Robert, and Ronald Gofourth; sisters, Donna Stashuk and Cassandra “Sandy” Klein, who feel her loss; brothers, Brian Touhey, Daniel and Timothy Touhey, who also will miss her deeply; nephews, Christopher, and Daniel and Ryan Green; and niece, Adele. Janice was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Adelma; and father, Edward Patrick Touhey.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Roberson Funeral Home, 215 Mary St., Punta Gorda. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens (on Jones Loop Road, east of Interstate 75) in Punta Gorda.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Janice’s name to Tidewell Hospice Inc., 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238 (donations to Tidewell Hospice will help deliver considerate care to people in need with the most compassionate nurses). Friends may visit online at to sign the memory book and extend condolences to the family.
