Crumbling canals

PUNTA GORDA — The waters may have receded, but the effects of summer’s incessant rains still linger for dozens of city residents whose damaged and crumbling seawalls still show the bruises of Mother Nature’s discontent.

As crews work frantically to repair or replace some 2,700 to 3,300 linear feet of fallen or broken seawalls in Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles — estimated to be about $1 million worth of damage — Punta Gorda public works officials said it still may be another six to eight weeks before the work is complete.
