I used to see the bird‑of‑paradise growing up north only in containers indoors. In fact, pot‑bound “birds” often flowered the best.
When I came down to Charlotte County some 13 years ago, I was thrilled to see large clumps growing here in the landscape with their magnificent flowers. Named after those famous tropical birds in New Guinea, this popular South African banana relative is worth watching in your own yard.
