TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s turnabout on the federal health care overhaul championed by President Barack Obama is creating an odd situation for the Republican governor.

Scott this week said he supports expanding Medicaid coverage to those Floridians just above the poverty line.

But Scott, who campaigned in 2010 with the backing of tea party conservatives, is quickly coming under fire from past supporters while getting praise from Democrats. One Democratic legislator joked Thursday about whether they should invite Scott to join their party.

Scott became the seventh GOP governor to support Medicaid expansion. But his decision drew national interest because Scott had been one of the most outspoken critics of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.

Some are already questioning whether Scott’s decision could cost him votes and support when he runs for re-election in 2014.
