County to receive $1M from BP settlement
SARASOTA COUNTY — Sarasota County will receive approximately $1 million — with neighboring Charlotte County getting slightly less — from a settlement with the operator of the oil rig that led to the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Sarasota County Coastal Resources Manager Laird Wreford said Thursday the money will come from a $1.4 billion settlement between the federal government and Transocean Ltd., which was operating the rig when the spill occurred. Wreford said the state would receive approximately $100 million from the settlement, with $56 million being
distributed to the 23 counties in the Gulf Consortium. The Gulf Consortium is a watchdog for RESTORE — the federal Resources and Ecosystem Stainability, Tourist Opportunities and Revived Economies Act — which directs a share of the fines resulting from the spill-affected areas. The state government will receive $44.6 million.
