Opening day Saturday for Miracle League
On behalf of Miracle League for Highlands County I would like to extend an invitation to the opening day of our 2013 season on Saturday.
Miracle League, in its 7th season of play here in Highlands County, is a baseball league for children and adults with physical and/or cognitive disabilities. Currently the Miracle League field, located at the Lake June ball field complex in Lake Placid, sits quietly. That will change at 9 a.m. Saturday when the cry “Play ball” echoes through the air and a record number of players take the field for opening day festivities!
Miracle League is a non-competitive baseball league, where the goal is for the athletes to have fun while developing the skills to play baseball as independently as possible. Each player works with a “buddy” for assistance. These “Angels in the Outfield,” as Miracle League buddies are called, assist the players to whatever degree necessary. Some players require more support than others while some are able to play with minimal help.
The games are played on a specialized field to ensure safety and accessibility for the players. The field is the only one of its kind in our region, and has made an amazing difference with regard to the independence the athletes enjoy, as many use adaptive walkers or wheelchairs for mobility.
Opening Day ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. followed by two adult games and then a youth game. During the season, games begin at 9 o’clock with two adult games for varying ability levels, followed by a youth game at 11. Fans and buddies are greatly appreciated throughout the season.
