Highlands County employees now have an opportunity to swap unused annual leave days for cash. County commissioners have given a nod of approval to a one-time opportunity for workers to sell back accrued vacation and sick time.

Approval was for a one-time deal, but County Administrator June Fisher told the board it would pave the way for the county to transition to a paid time off program, allowing employees to sell unused time annually, if they choose.
