Barbara Lindsey Durrance

Barbara Lindsey Durrance, 55, passed away in Gainesville, Fla., on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, due to cancer.

Lindsey was born in Bartow, Fla., on May 31, 1957, and was a lifelong resident of Fort Meade.

She was a philanthropist, who supported many causes such as Greenpeace, The Sierra Club, and many animal groups. Lindsey was also a homemaker, and part of her family citrus and cattle business.

She loved animals, especially her three dogs, Spartacus, Pharos, and Cyrano. Lindsey supported education and literacy.

She was a supporter of the Barbara Bush Foundation Celebration of Reading event in Estero, Fla., for many years. Lindsey also supported local classrooms by donating books and classroom supplies to teachers. She loved to read, and was a member of the Fort Meade Library Book Club. Lindsey was a graduate of the University of South Florida, and Fort Meade High School, Class of 1975.

Lindsey was preceded in death by her parents, W.J. Durrance Jr. and Barbara Jane Lindsey Durrance; paternal grandparents, W.J. Durrance, Sr. and Katie Durrance; maternal grandparents, Dr. S.A. Lindsey and Irene Lindsey.

She is survived by her brother, Douglas M. Durrance, Citra, Fla.; cousins, Ann Hull Etling, Russell Etling and Tina Banner, all of Gainesville, Fla.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at Hancock Funeral Home, 945 E. Broadway, Fort Meade.

Funeral: 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church, 135 E. Broadway, Fort Meade with Pastor Vincent Price and Col. Emmett Schaill officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make contributions to the First United Methodist Church, 135 E. Broadway, Fort Meade, FL 33841, the SPCA, 5850 Brannen Road South, Lakeland, FL 33813, or to a charity of choice.

Hancock Funeral Home, Fort Meade, is in charge of arrangements.
