The arrest of a 14-year-old girl last week, charged with taking the life of her newborn baby, had many asking why no one helped her or confronted her about the pregnancy she allegedly went to great lengths to hide.

The teenager was reported to have hidden her changing body by wearing baggy clothes and layers of clothing, even in the summer. When her maternal aunts expressed concern that she was pregnant, her mother had her take two pregnancy tests, but did not monitor them, saying she wanted to respect her daughter’s privacy, the arrest report said. Both tests were negative. Her infant son was born full term and healthy, but was allegedly killed at birth by his mother, who has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.
