Polk County Attorney Michael Craig is convinced that a timely settlement between the county and Republic Services will be reached, obviating the necessity of going to court to resolve the issue of overcharges estimated at $1.4 million that may have been assessed between 2005-2012.

As a result of his presentation Tuesday, commissioners unanimously agreed to accept as a good faith gesture from the trash hauling firm the amount of $100,000. That money would be directed into a separate account, going to the Universal Solid Waste Collection Fund.
