PANAMA CITY (AP) — A Panama City man is accused of running over and killing a brown pelican, a protected species.

Bay County Jail records show 31-year-old Brian Robinson is charged with fleeing and eluding police in a boat, boating under the influence and killing an endangered species. An attorney is not listed for him, and no current phone number was available.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that an officer saw Robinson circling a pelican on the water Aug. 17, then running over and killing the bird. The officer tried to stop him, but Robinson fled the scene.

He was eventually stopped and taken to jail after a breathalyzer test showed his alcohol level was over the legal limit. The pelican was later collected.
