E ngl ewood is the seasonal home of Berniece Skelton, the first female state trooper in New York.
When Berniece answered a blind ad in the newspaper during World War II, she had no idea it would be the start of a career that would last until 1969. She says the reason she was hired was that many of the men in the area had left to go to war and the state needed to fill some jobs. The job paid $12 a week but she was glad to get it. Being a secretary at one of the local theaters wasn’t exactly what she’d had in mind upon graduating from school.
