Coupon swapping at the library — a cut above

Martha Hallas clips coupons for the coupon-swap box she set up at the Elsie Quirk Library in Englewood. The coupon bin allows needy families to share coupons and cut down on household expenses. When the coupons are about to expire Hallas mails them off to military bases where many manufacturers have extended the expiration date. She's looking for schools and organizations to adopt bases to help cover the mailing costs.

ENGLEWOOD — Martha Hallas sat quietly in the Elsie Quirk Library clipping coupons from a plastic bin. As she sifted through the bin, she remarked how container never runs out.

“It’s perpetually filled,” she said.
