Mantas top Panthers with heavy hearts

A moment of silence for Jerone Campbell was held Friday night before the Lemon Bay High boys basketball game against Southeast in Englewood. Campbell died Friday from complications during a tonsillectomy at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda. In the foreground are brothers Kyler, left, and Kellan Constantine.

ENGLEWOOD — The banners hung by students from the walls of the Lemon Bay High School gymnasium were in memory of their late classmate, Jerone Campbell.

During a moment of silence before the Manta Rays game against Cypress Lake, the gym was eerily quiet as the players bowed their heads in reflection. Lemon Bay coach Sean Huber stood next to Robert Morrow and put his hand on the player’s back, feeling a deep, heavy inhale.
