different ways to fund public safety

DeSoto County Commissioner

The objective of the Public Safety Workshop on May 14 was to review the Municipal Service Benefit Unit/Municipal Service Taxing Unit rates and revenues that were put in place to fund the Public Safety Department and was in no way relative to the discussions of the need to construct a new fire station.

These funding mechanisms were implemented to provide for full funding of the Public Safety operations, which include Fire and Emergency Medical Services, outside of, and independent from reliance on the general fund; however, for years, the MSBUs/MSTUs have raised insufficient revenue to fully fund the Public Safety department and the county has relied on substantial transfers from the general fund to meet budget demands, to the tune of $1,101,439.
