• The DeSoto High School Bulldogs Bark became one of the more prestigious school newspapers last week when its staff won the Miami Herald award for general excellence. Six Bark staff members went to the convention with staff advisor Jill Maassen, where four of the local staff competed with 14 other school newspaper staff members in writing and designing a sports page. Susan Cavas, 17, Terrie Spires, 17, ReVae Mansfield, 17, and Joe Blackmon, 16, were given two hours to write two sports stories, lay out four ads of their own design, lay out the entire sports page and write headlines and cutlines. Still another award the Bark received was a framed certificate from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, naming the Bark in the Top 20 percent in excellence of the nation’s high school newspapers.
