Paperwhite narcissus bulbs are usually planted in a coarse inorganic medium such as small pebbles, glass chips, or marbles. Each bloom stalk will contain several small fragrant white flowers.

You’ll find containers of potted bulbs ready to bloom for the holidays in garden centers now, or order bulbs and plant every two weeks to have these springtime flowers blooming throughout the winter season.

Amaryllis bulbs are planted so about one half of the bulb is above the rim of the pot. Fill in around the bulb and tamp the soil down. Planting the bulb too deeply will delay flowering. Avoid getting water in the neck of the bulb.

Paperwhite narcissus requires a period of chilling before blooming. When you buy bulbs they will have already been given the proper cold treatment.

Amaryllis and paperwhite narcissus are popular flowering houseplants. Amaryllis may also be grown outdoors in our area. Both are grown from bulbs. When bulbs are planted in containers and grown indoors it is called forcing bulbs. For best flowering, many bulbs require a period of dormancy, accomplished by withholding water, reducing temperatures, or both. Bulbs will bloom about six weeks after planting. You’ll find containers of potted bulbs ready to bloom for the holidays in garden centers now, or order bulbs and plant every two weeks to have these springtime flowers blooming throughout the winter season.
