On Feb. 1, the sheriff issued a proclamation commending the work crossing guards perform to keep DeSoto County children safe. Gov. Rick Scott has recognized the first day of February henceforth as School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. "Your dedication each and very school day as you assist our children in crossing the busy intersection is very apparent in the way you give top priority to the safety of the children and the pedestrians as they cross going to and from school," Wise said in a prepared statement.
