With a double-overtime victory last weekend the Bartow Soccer Club’s Under 10 team earned the title All Stars Soccer Tournament in Lakeland.
The team won the gold medal 3-2 in beating the Lake Wales team.
“We ended up scoring in the last two or three minutes of the game,” said Coach Amador Mendoza.
And it was the team’s second game of the day. Earlier Sunday they got to the finals beating Winter Haven 1-0 in what Mendoza said was an exciting game.
The team was made up of 12 players from the winter league and coached by Mendoza and Alfonso Cortez. It was made of the best players from the league.
Teams in the tournament, aside from Bartow’s, were from two from Lakeland, Winter Haven, Lake Wales and Auburndale. To get into the finals, the Bartow squad tied a Lakeland team 1-1, then beat another Lakeland team, 2-1. Then, they won both games Sunday to go all the way. After the tie though Mendoza wasn’t so sure the team would get too far.
“We were a little bummed out because in a tournament like that it’s kind of hard to advance after a tie,” he said.
But they did keep going and for that Mendoza said that showed commitment and pride from the boys.
“It was a great group of kids … they were really awesome and I’m really proud of them,” he said.
