In the second year of the Thanksgiving Shootout at Bartow High School, twelve girls basketball teams competed Friday and Saturday nights.
Though not a traditional tournament with brackets and a champion at the end, the teams matched up against each other learning what other have as they will face each other during the season.
Bartow head coach Richard Murvin, said this year’s showing is showing the momentum of the weekend event as the crowd was larger and louder than last year.
He also said this year’s Lady Jacket team is looking pretty good this year, saying while not “real deep” there’s a lot of experience coming back.
Before the Thanksgiving Shootout the team had beaten Lake Gibson High 81-6 on Nov. 13.
In the tournament, the Lady Jackets lost Friday night to The Rock when a last second three-pointer doomed Bartow as it lost by one point.
On Saturday, the Lady Jackets and the Harmony High Longhorns played in the final game with Bartow winning 58-37. It was never a close contest as Bartow scored the first six points of the game and by the end of the first period it was winning 22-11. At halftime the Lady Jackets had a 37-22 margin and cruised through the second half to victory.
Teams that participated: Bartow, Harmony, Jefferson, Kathleen, Lake Region, Lake Wales, Lakewood Ranch, McKeel, Palmetto, St. Petersburg, Strawberry Crest, The Rock.
