Next week is Spring Break for Polk County students. In addition to the kids being out of school, it is also Easter. Many people will be taking their vacations at this time with family. It is a very busy time of the year for your local police departments because of heavy traffic and our youngsters having a lot of free time.
There are a couple of things that we at the Bartow Police Department would like for you to be aware of so that you may have the safest spring break possible.
If you are going on vacation, please plan accordingly and take steps to protect your property. Let your neighbors know that you are leaving. Give them a description of the cars that will be left in the driveway, the people that are authorized to be there and leave a light or two on timers to give the appearance that you are home. You can also let the police department know your plans so we can place you on the ‘house watch’ list. Make sure that your home, garage and any vehicles left behind are secure. Have your neighbors pick up your mail, and paper while you are away … and have them call the police if they see suspicious activity.
Parents who are not vacationing during this week, make sure that you have restrictions in place for your teenagers and that they understand fully the consequences of getting into trouble. Be mindful of our Polk County curfew ordinance for youngsters, and make sure they understand it as well.
The police department will have extra officers on the street during this time to provide all of us with more security, but you must be the front line of protection. No one knows your neighborhood like you.
Be safe, and have a great Spring Break.
