Youth Fair puts many talents on display

Nine-year-old Robbie Putnam, a student at Spessard Holland Elementary School, gave a detailed explanation of how he made the cutting board he exhibited as part of his illustrated talk on woodworking at the Polk County Youth Fair.

John Prescott, a fifth grader at First Methodist School in Bartow, presented an illustrated speech on Farmers for Families, an organization that donates fresh produce to families in need. John worked with the organization as his community service project, and was quite knowledgeable about the benefits of fresh produce and the positive effects on the receiving families.

Trace Foreman, a student at Bartow Middle School, waits to begin his illustrated speech about Wreaths Across America, an organization that donates wreaths to veteran cemeteries across the country, as well as providing other services for veterans. Trace handed out cards to the audience, which can be given to veterans in grattitude for their service.

Lesley White, a seventh grader at Union Academy, presented an illustrated speech on "Happy Birthday Florida," commemorating Florida's 500th birthday this year. Lesley gave an early history of the state and its discovery, as well as mentioning recent events.
